In Western Australia, pro-GM lobby groups are pushing for the lifting of the moratoria to allow the commercial growing of GMOs. A new group in WA which is working to keep Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) out of Western Australia. The “Say NO to GMO” group consists of concerned consumers and organisations working together to raise public awareness on the latest Genetically Modified news. They say the campaign is urgent since the moratorium on GMOs will end later this year and will be reviewed.

“Lets keep GM crops and food out of Western Australia by maintaining the ban on commercial growing of GM crops and food,” say the group. “We need to let the government know that we don’t want genetically engineered/modified crops commercially grown here in WA. Please lend a hand in the campaign by supporting our group and by asking people to sign our petitions… We are aiming to have the petitions around all the suburbs for people to see them.” The coalition consists of: Conservation Council of WA; Organic Growers Association; Network of Concerned Consumers (NCC). The Organic Growers Association say: “GMO technology is disallowed under organic certification and the organic industry as a whole has always adopted a cautious response to GM products. Events overseas have highlighted the need for care where herbicide resistance has actually increased over time with GM crops and many of the widely published advantages of GM have been disputed. Claims that human and environmental health is unaffected also remain unproven.”
