Don’t hold your breath for Quebec to act on GMO labelling

A decade ago, environmentalists urged the prohibition of food containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, on grounds that they might make people more resistant to antibiotics and prone to allergies. When that effort failed, critics said all GMO food produced in Quebec should at least be explicitly labelled as such, an idea premised on the reasonable idea that people ought to know what they’re eating. The Quebec Liberals espoused the cause before the 2003 election – then, once in power, dropped it. Now, however, a new study weakens the food industry’s contention that labelling would be prohibitively expensive, costing up to $200 million a year in Quebec. [more]
